The first component of the project aimed at providing green and energy efficient building strategies and solutions for the retrofitting of a damaged community building in Al Yarmouk Park in Mosul for it to become a prominent educational destination in Mosul, Nineveh, projected to be a hub for major green building and solar energy educational tours for enhancing the knowledge and skills of future trainees. The retrofitting work focused on sustainable and efficient building technology and resources, waste reduction and management, reduced energy consumption, reduced carbon emissions, reduced water use and protected natural resources.
The second component of the project aimed to advance government technical capacity to create green building policies and invest and build sustainably for a better return on investment. Given the large employment generation potential of green building and renewable energy in Iraq, a significant proportion of the Iraqi labor force and government staff need to be trained with the necessary skills to support the green building market.

The solar power system is designed as an off-grid system to provide continuous electricity for 24/7. The solar power system consists of 1 half-cut TOMMATECH solar panel that is mounted on the roof of the modular and connected to a combiner box with proper surge and earthing protection. The combiner box is connected to the Victron Energy SmartSolar 75/15 MPPT. The MPPT then feeds to the Pylontech batteries at the Victron Energy Battery Protect junction. The Victron Energy Battery Protect enables the system to feed the load using both batteries and the MPPT. The two units of Pylontech batteries are connected in parallel to the system that can power the 20 watts load for 200+ autonomy hours. The whole system is connected to the Victron Energy Cerbo GX for control and monitoring. Cerbo GX can be connected to the internet and finally monitored and controlled remotely.

The system has been designed to provide 16 Amps during day time and 10 Amps for six hours during night time. This vary based on the load, meaning that if the load during night time is less than 8 Amps, then the battery bank will withstand for more hours and vice versa.
We used a PV array of 4800W, and we chose high quality Victron Energy solar charge controllers (Victron MPPT solar charger 250/100 Tr-VE-Can) as specified below:

TAQA solar PV system is an On-grid system
designed to reduce the load on the main grid of TAQA during sunshine hours of
the day. The solar system consists of 216 half-cut (JA Solar) solar panels that
are mounted on roof mounted aluminum structure of the offices and DFAC
buildings. The solar panels are connected in series to form 12 strings, and
each string contains 18 solar panels. All the strings are connected to the Suntree
combiner box (SHLX-PV12/12) where SPDs and fuses are installed to protect the
system from any surge or overcurrent. The 12 strings are then connected to the
12 MPPTs on the SMA Sunny Tripower Core2 where they are inverter to AC power.
The SMA Sunny Tripower Core2 is an On-grid inverter with 110KVA inverting power
and can feed-in to the grid where the grid parameters within the safe working
range of the inverter. The output of the inverter is connected the Solar PV system
electrical board where further protection for the solar PV system is provided
through the installation of phase failures and contactors.
